John Adriko

Dr. Adriko John is a Crop Scientist with experience in both field agriculture and research. Dr. Adriko holds a PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Copenhagen, Masters Degree in Crop Science and Bachelors Degree in Agriculture, both of Makerere University. He has valuable skill and experience in agriculture and food security obtained during his work with District Local Government Production Department, National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS), and National Agricultural and Research Organization (NARO).

Tenod Ssali Reuben recently acquired a PhD in Plant Breeding from the University of Stellebosch in South Africa. He is a seasoned banana breeder with ardent interest in banana improvement using conventional approaches aided with Molecular tools.

Dr. Josephine Namaganda is a Senior Principal Research Officer, a Nematologist working with NARL assigned to the National Banana Research Program.

Dr. Onesimus Semalulu is a Principal Research Officer  attached to the Soils Program at NARL. He has a PhD (Soil fertility) and MSc (Soil Science) from University of Kentucky, USA and a BSc from Makerere University. He previously served as Head of Soils Program. 

Moses Matovu

Moses Matovu

Moses Matovu recently completed a Ph.D Program from the Queensland University of Australia. His study involved Molecular and Biochemical Characterisation of GM biofortified bananas with very interesting results. You can look up his report on the Banana Program Website.

Mrs. Regina Nagudi Nsubuga is a Procurement Officer at NARL. She is a registered Procurement Officer with Uganda Institute of procurement professional and a corporate member of Chartered Institute of Procurement &Supply (UK).  She holds a Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply (CIPS ). She holds a BSc in Procurement and Logistics Management from Uganda Christian University and a certificate in Procurement Audit with International Institute of Law - Acacia Avenue 2010

Caroline Nankinga Kukiriza

She received her bachelor and master’s degrees fromMakerere University in Kampala. Her PhD from the University of Reading, UK, examined ways of using fungal pathogens to control the wicked banana weevil. She recently was awarded funding from the country’s Millennium Science Initiative to battle the scourge of an invasive species of fruit fly that is decimating mango crops in Uganda.

Drake Mubiru senior scientist,  He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry and master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Kentucky, USA. His dissertation traced how E.coli, a bacterium that spreads in animal and human waste and can cause food poi-soning, moves through the soil. In Kentucky, as in Uganda, the use of livestock and poultry waste as fertilizer, which can contain E.coli bacteria, creates a possible route for contaminating the groundwater. “Right now most of the water in Kampala is contaminated,” Mubiru says.

Dr. Everline Komutunga is Senior Research Officer (Agro-meteorologist) and currently the Head of Soil Environment and Agrometeorolgy program at NARL. She has a PhD in Meteorology from University of Nairobi, an MSc in Agronomy from the University of Nottingham UK and a BSc in Geography from Makerere University. She previously worked as a Coordinator of rain-fed farming systems in the Districts of Mbarara,Kiruhura, Isingiro, Ntungamo,Ssembabule, Rakai and Ibanda.

He holds a PhD in Plant Biotechnology from the University of Pretoria South Africa, an MSc. in Plant breeding from the University of Orange Free State USA, and a BSc. in Botany/Zoology from Makerere University

Prof. Tushemereirwe Wilberforce

Prof. Tushemereirwe Wilberforce

Wilberforce Tushmereirwe, also known as  “Tush”, has been NARL’s director since 2010,. He is a stalwart of Uganda’s national banana research programme. He has been involved in this programme since its inception in 1990, and was made its leader in 1996 after completing his PhD at the University of Reading in the UK. His training is in plant pathology. He has contributed extensively to the understanding of such banana diseases as black sigatoka and banana wilt, and has co-authored articles examining the acceptance of scientifically enhanced bananas by Ugandan farmers and city-dwellers
